From January 11-31, 2010, Residencia en la Tierra was the venue for the freehand drawing month: a series of daily workshops whose central theme was freehand drawing. A unique experience. For 22 days, renowned artists and young talents came together to lead different drawing workshops for the residents, covering a wide range of activities that drawing can offer: comic books, spoken portrait, landscape, illustration, drawing and the body, drawing and embroidery, etc. Artists invited to give the workshops included José Antonio Suárez Londoño, Adriana Berrío, Paola Gavíria, Angélica Teuta, Miguel Jarra, Elena Landínez, Julian Urrego, María Alejandra Muñoz, José Tomas Giraldo and Joni B.
The workshops were attended by all of the residents staying with us during that period. In other words, the events were not exclusive to artists or freehand professionals, but were open to anybody interested in freehand drawing, including amateur enthusiasts and those who felt a particular sensibility towards this art form.
José Antonio Suárez and rubber stamps
José Antonio Suárez Londoño, a master in small-scale drawing, led a two day workshop at the Residencia en la Tierra that left everyone dumbfounded. He taught an ancestral technique which, as most ancestral techniques, was invented by the Chinese: stamps. José Antonio, who has spent over twenty years working with the technique of carving eraser stamps, shared his expertise and his experience with the residents. The technique requires meticulousness, dedication and attention, since it consists of drawing a figure with a scalpel on a white, flat eraser. The quality of the result depends on the smoothness of the incision.
Amongst the many activities performed with stamps during the workshop, it is particularly worth noting the alphabet: each of the participants created a stamp with a single letter of the alphabet, these were then put together and used to write a phrase that contains them all: “El veloz murciélago hindú comía feliz cardillo y kiwi, la cigüeña tocaba saxofón detrás del palenque de paja”.
Publication “January, Freehand Month”
The testament to this unforgettable encounter is a publication created as part of the Magazines Workshop given by Pedro José Giraldo, director of the comic book “Larva”. The publication was entirely handmade in an exhaustive two-day production process managed by a team that included Sebastián Cruz, Adriana Berrío, Elena Landínez, Daniel Santiago, Fátima Vélez, Mr. Zombie (Pedro José Giraldo) and Pedro Nicolás Villegas.
